Answer Engine Optimization (AEO): How to Rank in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews

Search is being rewritten by AI. Here's how AEO differs from SEO, what actually gets cited in ChatGPT and Perplexity, and the content structure that wins.

A growing share of buying-intent queries never touch Google's blue links anymore — they end in a ChatGPT answer, a Perplexity citation, or a Google AI Overview. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is how you make sure your brand is the one being quoted, not the one being replaced.

AEO vs SEO: what's actually different

SEO optimizes for a ranked list of ten blue links. AEO optimizes for a single synthesized answer that may cite one to five sources. The good news: strong SEO fundamentals still win most of the fight. The bad news: how you structure the content on the page matters more than it ever did.

  • SEO rewards depth, backlinks and topical authority.
  • AEO rewards clarity, structure, and 'quotable' one-sentence answers.
  • SEO cares about intent match. AEO cares about extractability.
  • SEO measures ranking positions. AEO measures citations and share of voice inside AI answers.

How ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google pick which sources to cite

AI search engines don't index the whole web in real time. They lean on retrieval — usually Bing, Google or their own crawler — pull the top 10–20 results, and then decide which passages to quote. Being in that shortlist is table stakes; being the quotable passage is what wins the citation.

The extractability test

Open any page on your site. Can a stranger copy a single self-contained sentence that answers the target question without needing the paragraph around it? If not, an LLM will skip you for a site that can.

The content structure AI engines love

  1. 1Lead every section with a direct one-sentence answer, then explain.
  2. 2Use descriptive H2s that mirror natural-language questions.
  3. 3Add a short summary or TL;DR block near the top of long articles.
  4. 4Prefer short paragraphs (2–4 sentences) and clean bullet lists.
  5. 5Include comparison tables — LLMs quote structured data more than prose.
  6. 6End long guides with a FAQ block using real question phrasing.
"The pages that win in AI search read like reference documents, not sales letters. Answer first. Persuade second."

Technical AEO — schema, feeds, and llms.txt

  • Ship Article, FAQPage, HowTo and Product schema wherever it fits — LLMs use schema as a shortcut for meaning.
  • Publish a clean sitemap and an RSS/JSON feed of new content — Perplexity, Bing and OpenAI's crawler all use them.
  • Add an /llms.txt file pointing to your most quotable canonical pages.
  • Allow GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended in robots.txt unless you have a specific reason not to.
  • Make sure your key content is server-rendered — most AI crawlers still don't execute JavaScript.

The AEO checklist

  1. 1Every important page opens with a direct one-sentence answer.
  2. 2Question-shaped H2s throughout — 'What is…', 'How do you…', 'Why does…'.
  3. 3FAQ block on every cornerstone article, marked up with FAQPage schema.
  4. 4Author bios and E-E-A-T signals visible on every article.
  5. 5Comparison tables and specs surfaced as HTML, not screenshots.
  6. 6AI crawlers explicitly allowed in robots.txt.
  7. 7Quarterly review of which AI engines actually cite you — track it like ranking.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No — it's a layer on top. Every AI answer engine still starts from search results. Strong SEO is a prerequisite for AEO, not an alternative to it.

Should I block AI crawlers to protect my content?

Only if your business model depends on gated content. For most sites, blocking AI crawlers guarantees you'll be replaced in AI answers by whoever didn't block them.
